Quest 2 headsets comprise 2/3 of the market

Here at Brain Man VR we’re all about getting as many people using virtual reality as possible. We feel strongly that any company that thinks they have plenty of time before they need to start taking an interest in virtual reality are plain wrong. There is every reason to believe that after many false dawns, the rapid growth in affordable VR headsets is going to bring us into the era of the metaverse sooner rather than later.

The market was dominated for many years by headsets that cost in excess of £500 and required a powerful graphics PC to provide the computational power necessary to produce the rapidly updated images shown to each eye necessary for creating the illusion of presence in the virtual environment, bringing the price of entry up to anywhere between £2000 - £4000. That all changed when Palmer Lucky’s dream of creating an affordable stand-alone version of the Oculus headset was realised, with the help of Meta (née Facebook) started cranking them out a couple of years ago at a very affordable price point.

Now in 2022, the Quest 2 headsets dominate the marketplace accounting for 67% of all headsets used to play VR games on the extraordinarily popular Steam gaming platform. Rumoured to have been selling these VR headsets at a loss for the first few years, Meta have recently pushed up the prices, which will no doubt slow growth in sales. Yet having established themselves as the affordable way to get a decent-but-not-top-of-the-range virtual reality experience, Meta look likely to dominate the mass market for the foreseeable future.
